Carl wrote poetry throughout his career, but it would be the sculpture that really got him noticed. Carl's father was an immigrant from Sweden who worked as a marine draftsman at Quincy's famous shipyards. He excelled in public elementary school and earned himself a full scholarship to one of the east coast's most prestigious private schools. Even though Frank Stella was one of Carl's Phillips Academy classmates, they didn't meet until after Carl moved to New York in 1957.
