The History of the English College

A second group of murals depicted the martyrdoms of the English Catholics in the 16th century, including Campion. Unfortunately these frescoes are no longer extant. Everything we know about them comes from a series of detailed engravings that were published by Giovanni Cavalieri shortly after they were completed. The artist has clearly drawn on some of Verstegans' early printed images of 16th century executions for direct inspiration.
