Raphael Holland Shedd's chronicles were published in 1577, the year that first freestanding theater was built just outside of London proper. Shakespeare based entire sections of some of his history plays on that particular work. Despite its small size, Elizabeth's Navy did have one advantage: The new ships built during her reign had been redesigned to make them faster and more maneuverable.
