The History of the Federal Reserve System

The Fed has not dampened business cycles as measured by variation in real output. We haven't really gained by instituting a central bank and going off the gold standard. The economy is much more diversified now than it was then. And ironically, that's one of the charges that's often laid at the feet of laissez-faire capitalism.
