The Importance of the Aggregate Size of the Fed's Balance Sheet

How important is the aggregate size of the Fed's balance sheet versus the composition and duration of the assets that it holds? And what can we surmise about the path of inflation and growth based on what the Fed decides to do with that composition? Sure. So that's an academic discussion, one that I take sides on, but still is open to debate between what's called the stock, which is the size and composition of the balance sheet and the flow schools of thought. The Bank of England countered Bernanke's statement with I think the best flow description in their website.
