The Origins of the Environmental Justice Movement
The environmental justice movement started in Warren County, North Carolina. In the mid-1980s, a study found that three out of four toxic landfills were located in predominantly African-American counties. Charles Lee was there on official duty and saw something he hadn't seen before: civil rights activism combining with environmental activism.
