Piketty on Inequality

The secular cycle idea creates a structure that everything fits into neatly. PNN described inequality rising through the pre-soul period of 1800 to 1900, dropping precipitously during the two world wars, then gradually rising again since then. In popular understanding of American history, you can trace out optimistic and pessimistic periods. The cycles seem to assume huge crises killing off 30% to 50% of the population but those don't happen any more in first world countries.
