The End of the War in Europe
When she was 18, Elizabeth joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service. As the war drew to her close, she joined other recruits learning how to drive and service military vehicles. By then, Princess Elizabeth had fallen in love with Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. Their wedding in November 1947 was described by Winston Churchill as a flash of colour in grey post-war Britain.
