John Updike and Jack Kerouac would seem to be absolute bookends, totally reverse polls in the literary struggle. What they had in common was the desire to let the sentences come unspooling out - not to sit in judgment on your own work prematurely. I'm just reading right now my favorite book of the past few years: Don Patterson's commentary on Shakespeare's sonnets. It's an absolutely wonderful book, which obviously reproduces all the sonnets. Finishes sentence on it starts another one playing around with the same ideas...to see Shakespeare's mind and play in the sun.
