In the genesis account that we studied a few weeks or last week, this idea of a mark being placed upon cane was actually meant to protect him. There's even the possibility here that blackness might be metaphorical rather than literal. In fact, book of mormon language, a mark, anything that helps people distinguish between those that are with god and those that re without him. The curse is separation from god. It's always been that same curse, and it's a curse we bring upon ourselves.
