How I Learned Mandarin Characters
I thought maybe we'd start by going back to before your PhD. So maybe starting with undergrad, was language always an interest for you? Yeah, that's a good question. I got interested in NLP after I studied abroad in Japan by junior year and learned Japanese. And then in my senior year I did a research project for my machine learning class,. And that's how I got started. Then I took a break for a little while to actually teach English in Japan and work as a translator and interpreter. Eventually I went back to do my PhD after a few years off. But yeah, we're just good at different things, at least for the moment.
