Evans' father was a geologist, with a keen interest in antiquities and collecting. He would accompany his son on field excursions to remote parts of Eastern Europe. Evans became very fond of these regions and soon developed a passion for the Balkans. In 1883 he travelled to Greece where he met Heinrich Schleeman who had uncovered some artifacts on Greek soil. After finding more evidence that they were from an older civilization than first thought, he moved them to Crete. Here he found signs of what he believed to be a forgotten, flourishing civilization.
