The History of Philip the Great
There is virtually no evidence that Rome and Macedonia had ever formally established any sort of contact prior to the reign of Philip. Nothing suggests that the Antigoneids felt particularly snug by this lack of diplomatic outreach, however. According to Polybius, it was Demetrius who first urged Philip to direct his energies against Rome. While the king was participating in the Namean Games of 217, a messenger brought him a letter with news of the Battle of Lake Trasimene which left Hannibal Barca in control over much of northern Italy.
