Descartes didn't really realize that his doctrine of innate ideas presupposes that the mind is largely unconscious. Leibnitz brought out and showed why locke was wrong in his critique of innateness. On descarte's view, conscious thinking is a straightforward exploitation of unconscious cognitive resources. They are not separate compartments. Theconscious mind itself just taps into the unconscious mind because all these ideas are present innately.
