Penicillin Allergy - What Is the Story?

In the mid 1960s, concerns were raised that cephalosporin use in patients with a penicillin allergy might be associated with an increased reaction risk. By the mid 1970s, skin and serologic testing showed potential immunologic cross reactivity between penicillins and first generation cep Halosporins. In 1976, Robert Morling and Morton Schwartz said all cepHalosporins probably should be avoided in patients with past history of anaphylaxis or immediate hypersensitivity to any of the penicILLins. They also importantly stated that whether or not these reactions were due to cross sensitivity is unknown since penicillin allergic patients also have an increased rate
