The Importance of Sex in Relationships
In judaism, there's a tora commandment known as i ona, which obligates a man to provide pleasurable sexual intercourse to his wife. In relationships, it's not the case that enjoyable sex didn't matter before, like eli says, it's more about evolving expectations of marriage. When basic survival was harder, more basic needs had to be met first, finding food and eking out a living took precedence. But sex always remained an important source of pleasure and a powerful way to find connection. That's why intimacy can be so intertwined with religion and even expressing and experiencing your selfhood.
