CHAPTER

The Commitment Effect

The commitment effect is operating independently of my rational understanding for why I made that commitment in the first place. There are even stories of that happening in POW camps where prisoners were given little rewards like cigarettes or extra rations, food for writing testimonials about why communism was so great. And then at the end of the war, those soldiers were much more likely to actually defend communism,. Even though they were no longer being forced to or rewarded for it. One story you could tell is that we sort of on some level want to show strength and consistency as a way to sort of demonstrate that we can be trusted to our fellow tribespeople.
