CHAPTER

What Makes Europeans Unique?

Theory that's presented in the book begins with variation in the organization of families. You can find variation just within Han Chinese in individualism by looking at the rice agriculture, because rice agriculture fosters particularly intensive clans and forms of kinship. So you're going to create variation just within that single ethnic group. The question is why did Europeans go down this path that really accentuized the individualism in the analytic thinking and the impersonal trust and ended up with quite different institutions, which hadn't been seen before.
