Elaine's Story - A History of Eugenics

The eugenics board of North Carolina had determined that Elaine should be sterilized after giving birth by Caesarean section in 1968. She wasn't even told. Several years later, after getting married and trying for more kids, Elaine learned what had happened. In 1974, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on her behalf,. alleging she'd been unlawfully deprived of the right to bear children. The case dragged on and on and was eventually decided against her in 1983. With help from the historian Joanna Schoen and others, the buried institutional records relating to Elaine's case and those of thousands more came to light. And the campaign for recognition and recompense suddenly gained a new momentum
