The Origins of the Apple

The word apple in middle english was originally a generic term for fruit. In germany and england the word narrowed to mean what we mean today simply an apple. The situation is a little more complicated because there are differences in languages in northern italy. Art historically speaking they continue representing it as a fig into the 16th century. It's kind of a fossil from the earlier sense of pineapple meaning pinecone but no one's aware of this yet.
