The Limitation of Linguistics
McWhorter: I'm curious and I don't know a whole lot about linguistics. I read Stephen Pinker's The Language Instinct. And he would say that I have had some useful ideas about what happens when languages come together and how they change. But it might not surprise you to know that Pinker is being treated the same way as me. There is an effort within the language society of America to strip him of his epilets because he is not sufficiently woken, therefore shouldn't be representing the field. It's just, it's not a pretty state of affairs.
