The Cold War and the Chinese Communist Party
In 1971, China perceives not the United States as its number one enemy, but the Soviet Union. The Chinese Soviet split took place in the late 1950s and early 1960s. And this is the reason why a few years later, Vietnam and China would also split openly. It ultimately lead to the full-blown war between Vietnam and China in 1979.
