Marxism and the Industrial Revolution
Inequality did increase as a result of the industrial revolution. Between 17 80 and 18 30, output per laborer in the u k. Grew over 25% but wages rose barely five%. The proportion of national income going to the toper entile of the population rose from 25 % in 18 o one to 35 percent in 18 forty eight. Marxism took carlyle's revulsion against the industrial economy and substituted a utopia for nostalgia. It believed that the industrial economy was doomed to produce an intolerably unequal society divided between the bourgeoisie, the owners of cap and a propertiless proletariat.
