I think there are two main issues here. First is what I write about in range called the end of history illusion, this psychological finding that we will all recognize that we have changed a lot in the past based on our experiences and then say, but now I'm pretty much done. At no time is that more true than from about 18 to the late 20s. Then you undergo the fastest time of personality change. And so essentially right at the start of that period, we're telling someone pick now, which is really asking them to pick for a person they don't yet know.
