The Stardust's Pilot's Accident
A jet stream is a fast-moving column of air caused by the shifting temperatures in the Earth's atmosphere. During World War II, Allied aircraft sometimes became trapped in these confusing high-velocity air flows. It wasn't until 1952 that the UK fully understood the phenomena. So as experienced as the Stardust's pilot was, he wouldn't have known about it at the time.
