How to Write a Shakespearean Novel About Rural People
I felt like I didn't know you could write about rural people in a Shakespearean way. And it was Faulkner who lit me up because I saw like, okay, here's the level this can be done at. Like, you can take rural people, rural subjects and create Shakespearean tragedy credibly out of their lives. That was the feeling. It would take a long time to sort of explain my relationship to it all. But yeah, no, the way that the South and rural and Midwestern America is treated in literature is wanting.
