The shoe peddler and fishmonger trial of 19 21 brought into sharp as bitter divisions in american life. President harding signed the emergency quotas act into law, establishing an annual quota system for new immigrants. There was also a growing divide between urban and rural culture and between younger and older generations. African Americans migrate from the deep south to the cities of the north, bringing jaz music and the artistic flourishing known as the harlem renaissance. But rapids change sparks a violent backlash as the cu klox clan spreads terror across American soil.
