The Meaning of the Word Do
Elizabeth's poem also illustrates another example of the halfway house of English grammar at the time. The word do was used to form sentences during the period of Jeffrey Chaucer in the late 1300s. Now we're approaching the Shakespearean period about two centuries later so it's a good time to revisit the story of the word do and how its use had evolved over time.
