Introduction

In 1968, Garrett Hardin published a paper that hypothesized a village whose inhabitants graze cattle on a pasture held in common. He concluded such a situation would inevitably lead to overgrazing and the collapse of the pasture. The Swiss village of Turbell was grazing cattle on a commons since at least 1483 without destroying it. In Switzerland isn't some special culture, Japanese villagers managed grazing land in a very similar way.
