The Salvation Army
Former Methodist reform minister William Booth first founded the East London Christian mission, which would later become the salvation army. He had left the church a dozen years earlier after growing disillusioned by the lack of focus on service to the less fortunate. The new name came about when Booth was dictating a letter to his secretary in which he referred to his mission as a volunteer army.
