At the time of his death, Washington owned 317 slaves at Mount Vernon and its surrounding farms. Yet he says that he would like to move towards emancipation. He's not sure quite how to do it, but emancipation should be the goal,. In his will, he provides for the emancipation of the 150 so-so. So Washington is living in an age of transition. Transition from the old world of hierarchy to this new world of Enlightenment and self-transformation.
