How Long Should You Write a Novel?

Tolstoy's war and peace contains 675,000 words all in perfect order. We shouldn't write a book that long or anywhere near that long. Aiming for a certain word length is helpful because a target length offers a structure. A novel that is a lot longer or a lot shorter already has a strike against it.
