The Relationship Between Sign and Referent

Augustine pays a lot of attention to semiotics and a persistent theme is the relationship between sign and its referent. Those who love signs more than their referents are corrupt, he says. And so for Augustine, human beings putting angels to one side or at the status of being emago and an image is a sign. It's a sign that's real because in the order of signs, some signs are actually real things.
