The Indignity of the Outside
In germany, proximity was a big part of how people were never that far away from home. But in the united states, not only is it the case as you describe, where mothers and siblings sometimes travel hours to get to their loved ones who are incarcerated,. then they have to experience the indignity of being treated like bad people who want to come see their loved ones. And so the more it's like the outside, the easier that transition back is.
