Pan Am's Downfall in the Aircraft Business
Too many 747s were ordered early on and operating costs were rising due to the 1973 oil crisis. The Civil Aeronautics Board began permitting larger airlines with more extensive domestic networks into intercontinental routes. Pan Am was said to be ill-prepared for calamities in the airline business. They became one of the most financially troubled airlines, whereas a couple decades earlier, they were prospering.
