The Importance of Quality Adjusted Life Years
If one drug saves 10,000 lives and another 5,000, the inventors get twice as much money from the pool. The metric that we use is not life saved but it's quality adjusted life years. We look at whether the person in the years that they live longer are at good health or in lousy health. It's a very important point that currently pharmaceutical companies are not the most well loved of companies despite the fact that their product does a lot of good.
