The Role of White Actors in Shakespeare's Ophelia

I once saw this BBC televised production of Shakespeare where Ophelia was played by a white guy and there was this long intro, sort of excusing and apologizing for it. They made the case that as far as we know, Ophelia could easily have been white. That sounds very wrong to me. I'm not sure what they were up to. The play was always long, long performed until actually, I think the first time was in the 19th century when it wasn't. It just happens to be racist as an argument.
