Ishi emerged from the wilderness in despair to seek death. There had been ten million native americans. By 19 11, there wereless than 300 thousand. The californian gold rush had brought a wave of new settlers west. Ishi's tribe, the yahi, resisted, but by the 18 seventies, all but a handful had been wiped out.
