The Importance of Sentience in Animal Behavior
I think most people are pretty clear that most mammals have sentience by now. Most controversial recently has been fish and there are lots of experiments which I describe in detail in the book. The ability to feel pain is fundamental in explaining the behavior of fish in certain experimental situations. So with fish feel pain then what about other creatures? Now it turns out I think cephalopods, that is squids and octopuses, do also possess sentience. Stations probably not and insects probably not although bees it's disputed.
