In 15 82, pope gregory the thirteenth had an up dated edition of corpus of canon law published. And appearing in that up dated edition was the following, heresy, having the opinion of innumerable worlds. According to martines research, at least five witnesses who testified against bruno in venice mention his cosmological beliefs as part of his heresy. Four of the five repeated this testimony at the trial in rome. A witness to his execution recounted that one of the heresies read aloud before bruno was killed was his belief that worlds are innumerable. The idea of this sort of plurality of worlds was a significant part of the accusations that led to bruno's fate
