KO is much older than APKO. It was a tool that was developed at Google. And it will build an image that contains just enough to run the Go application. So KO generates a statically linked Go application, runs it on top of chain guards static image. Then the combination of these two gives you a OCIM image that you could then go to play in Kubernetes or Docker or whatever you need.
