The Last Emperor of Byzantium
Constantine was the last emperor of Byzantium, Constantine the 11th paleologos. He had fewer than 8,000 men to defend a 12-mile circuit of walls against at least 50,000 Ottoman soldiers. The Ottomans were part of this late medieval world of technological and military innovation. It took weeks after most of the army arrived for the guns, probably 69 of them in total,. an enormous number for the time to be hauled into place.
