i just thought of two interesting, contrasting examples. One is donald kingsbury's a courtship rite and the other is eleanor arneson's ring of swords series. The one i am thinking about which i absolutely love is called the potter of bones. We see these patterns over and over again, with humans having dark ages. And there isn't a line of mid tack level, or in original treck, for example,. There'll be a lot of just at the threshold of the space age.
