Kate Batts was the Bell family's neighbor apparently there had been some kind of dispute between the bells and Kate in 1817 just before the bells troubles began. According to reports objects were flying loose in her house and she begged for spare pins from neighbors which she was thought to have used for sticking in dolls to cast evil spells. In September of 1820 Lucy Bell the Bell matriarch came down with a lung infection and Kate was despondent. She hung around Lucy's room bemoaning her condition saying loose poor loose I'm so sorry you're sick don't you feel better loose what can I do for you loose. At last a reverend manifested a very inquisitive desire
