The Shame of Not Listening
Dave Barger: When I'm talking to a client and they look away because they're writing things down as many of us do, so many of them will say, I'm listening. And that's another clue. You are so accustomed to giving that kind of feedback to people because you've internalized the shame of being told you're not listening or asked. He says he uses humor to manage all kinds of discomfort, including shame. "If you felt shame, you would probably continue to replay that interaction at least for a few hours"
