The Rise of Moral Psychiatry
The most famous example from the 19th century is Bertha Mason in Jane Eyre. It's quite a strange novel, isn't it, when you sort of read it now? Some people read it as a real romance story, Jane and Mr. Rochester. But you kind of think, but he's locked his wife in an attic. And then there's that big fire at the end,. And then he goes blind at the end, is that right? Yeah. And it seems like they only sort of have an equal relationship, because he's disabled. Obviously, it's a great book. We wouldn't still be reading it if it wasn't such a fantastic piece of work.
