The Struggles of the IWW

Grain trimmers in the port of Philadelphia voted to go on strike, demanding a pay increase. Most employers soon caved in and agreed to increases up to 40 cents per hour base pay,. 60 cents overtime and 80 cents on Sundays and holidays. But one employer refused to permit the increase and instead locked out union workers. So the IWW continued to strike. Fletcher recounted a visit by Irish socialist James Larkin who addressed a crowd of striking workers. In an able and eloquent manner, he betrayed the conditions of the workers generally.
