The Role of Recitation in Education in the 20th Century

Elocution lessons were recommended for schools in the 1830s, 1840s and onwards. Recitation was a way of learning reading but as an oral performance rather than silent reading. In school management manuals from the 1860s recitation lessons were supposed to be models for life. You would teach children how to position their vocal organs just like you might learn to burn or walk in a particular way.
