The Pass Blast, Episode 18 66

Base on balls was introduced with the 18 64 season, but largely unenforced. It is in 18 66 that umpires start to call balls and many people resisted it as not baseball. One of these was charley paybor who refused to take first base when his team mate ran for him. So what we have learned from this series, i think, and what we will continue to learn, and what i hoped we would learn, is that everything has generated controversy at some point. Like every rule, seemingly,. that we take for granted, that we think of as dating from the very beginning of baseball, made someone mad at some point about its not real any more.
