People tend to sort themselves out, not only in their residential patterns, but also in their social interactions. 20th century Japanese immigrants to Brazil married other Okinawans rather than marrying fellow Japanese from other parts of Japan. Most 19th century marriages that took place in New York's Irish enclaves were marriages between people from the same county in Ireland.
